Silver Surfer #14(March 1970)

Wow, could the Surfer be any more dramatic here? "My head! What have you done?" For a guy with the power cosmic, he sure spazzes out pretty easily...

  1. So let me get this straight, he has Cosmic Powers, or Power cosmic ;) heh, and he can't fly without his surfboard? That's Pretty lame.

  2. You know, I'd honestly never thought about that... He must be able to fly without the surfboard, but I can't think of a specific example... Hmm, maybe I'll dig out my old Silver Surfer books one day.

  3. I'd assume he HAS to be able to, other wise he's be extremely easy to beat, yet Spidey think's he's gonna fall to his doom like an injured bird or something.

  4. Good old responsible Spidey... "Oh no, the guy who can fly through space unprotected and face off against Galactus is falling to the street! How horrible!"

    ReplyDelete
  5. And of course that's when he went to help then got Sucker-punched on the next page of the comic right?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Probably. That's just like Spidey though.

    ReplyDelete
  7. One of the best Spidey moments ever is when he tried to punch Spot only to brain himself right in the face. Man that had me laughing for days.

  8. Sometimes you've got to wonder about poor Spidey. For a guy with a spider-sense and near genius level IQ he tends to do some stupid things.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've noticed that. You'd think with his intellect he wouldn't fall for such easy traps either. I'm still lobbying for a Spiderman/Nightwing Crossover even though I'll never get it.

  10. I'd love that, 'cause I've ALWAYS said that out of every DC hero, NW reminds me the most of Spidey. Between the similar way they fight, and the constant banter during their battles, they seem taylor made for an x-over.

  11. They really do, They'd get along so well but I could see them starting it with Dick, the playboy coming to town dating the Movie Star Mary Jane so Peter resents him or something, then they eventually work together and find out about one another. Hm..who could the villains be in that though? Two-Face and Kingpin?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well, I'm def down with Two-Face, but I'm not too high on Kingpin. He's just too sane(or at least he was). Ideally, the Spidey enemy I's have chosen would have been the Eddie Brock Venom. Since he's not Venom anymore, how about we go with Norman Osborn? That guys in like every Marvel comic nowadays anyway, we might as well put him in the cross promotion x-over as well!

  13. I just picked those two cause I see them both as Mobsters. I could see Stormin Norman but then I'd want Gobby and Joker and I can't see Joker belittling himself as he'd put it just to deal with Nightwing, unless of course Dick was still Bats.

So whats the deal with Norman now that Cap is back, I assume you'd know more than anyone else I talk to.

  14. Yeah, Spidey/Bruce vs. Goblin/Joker might actually be better then anything else we listed. Spidey and Bruce would probably make an awesome team, like Bruce and Dick did.

I don't think Cap is officially back yet(I think that's like one month away). Good question... In the BENDIS controlled Marvel U, who the hell knows what's going to happen. Common sense says Cap re-joins the New Avengers, but then what? Marvel practically killed Cap as a criminal, so I really don't know what his return is going to lead to. Grr, just thinking about the way Cap was treated prior to his death still manages to piss me off.

  15. I know there's two issues where Spidey and Bruce did team up, in one they fought I believe Carnage and Joker and in the other it was Kingpin and someone else...I can't place it.

Yeah, I hated everything about that, the fact he died as a criminal pretty much then everyone switched their views and praised him, the fact that a guy who carried a shield for his ENTIRE CAREER got shot really just annoyed me for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ha, I never even really thought about the Cap/shield thing!

    ReplyDelete
  17. That was the most ironic thing to me. Especially because I heard it before I read it so i imagined him with his shield STILL getting shot and that just killed my Cap buzz.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope, Cap gets put down with his hands cuffed behind his back... Captain fricking America, gunned down like a common criminal. Unbelievable...

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's a REALLY lame way to kill off one of their best characters. That's like Supes getting shot with a Kryptonite bullet while he's under arrest. I'd be disappointed in reading that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. HA... That visual is kind of funny. First off, why/how could Supes even be arrested? In my mind I now see Superman in Cap's place in Captain America #25. Deathstroke smipers him from a rooftop with a Kryptonite bullet, and Lois Lane(under Lex Luthor's mind control)finishes the job during the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lol you know the boyscout Supes. If he was under arrest he'd turn himself in, then they'd slap on the Kryptonie Cuffs and boom, under arrest.

Lmao @ Under Lex Luthor's mind control, I could definitely see that. Hm...gotta wonder if that would've sold more than him and Doomsday beating each other into oblivion.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The Doomsday thing is one of those comic book deaths that has always left me really conflicted. On one hand, for the most part the story is pretty solid(I've got the Death of Supes TPB, so I've read the full story)and the way Supes went down(defending the city he loved)was pretty damn heroic. BUT, while Doomsday was a pretty awesome looking villain, I can't help but feel it SHOULD have been Lex Luthor somehow involved with Supes death. I mean come on, Lex is Supes arch-nemesis, if anybody should have killed Supes it's def should have been him. That was the only good thing about Cap's death, the entire thing was orchestrated by Cap's arch-enemy, The Red Skull, who had the most reason to want to see Cap dead(or lost in time.....).

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with you, Lex should've been the one to get rid of Supes, even if it was just getting Doomsday to weaken him, then being the one that finished Supes off cowardly.

Okay wait, please explain the Lost in time comment because I haven't been reading much Marvel besides ASM.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, Lex def earned the right to kill Supes IMO. Although he didn't actually kill Supes, I did enjoy Lex's conversation with Supes body during the Funeral for a Friend TPB.

Oh god, do I have to? *Sigh* OK... It turns out that Cap wasn't actually killed, he was shot by a mind-controlled Sharon Carter with a gun that somehow transported him back in time to various parts of his past. It seems Red Skull wanted to pluck a weakened Cap out of the timestream so he could take possession of his body and walk around as Cap doing terrible things to sully Cap's good name. I still haven't gotten the most recent issue of Cap Reborn(DAMN POST OFFICE!!!), so I'm not sure what's transpired since the last issue, but from the issues I do have, that seems to be the story, Cap's actually lost in time, not dead(like a certain Caped Crusader...).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ahh I so haven't read that. I can only imagine what Lex said to a dead Superman.

Ahh so he sent him back in time so he can sully his good name. Sounds kinda lame. Well the plan does anyway but If that's what they gotta do the bring Cap'n America back than so be it. Now bring back Bats for us.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh man, I'll have to post that scene with Lex and "dead" Supes. Once I'm done responding here I'll dig that out and post it tomorrow.

That plan bothers me so much, 'cause I thought the Red Skull was smarter then that. He won. He actually concocted a plan that led to the death of his arch-enemy, the bane of his existance for 60+ years. Why do you need to sully his name? If I were the Skull, I think I'd be content knowing that thanks to my evil actions I killed the Sentinel of Liberty... No, instead it seems Cap's "death" was all part of some elaborate, hokey plan.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've always loved the way Lex explains his actions and motivations when it comes to Superman. I honestly believe what you posted, that Lex considers himself the real hero, while Supes is the one in the wrong. I can remember Lex also stating that if it wasn't for Supes always distracting him, he'd have eradicated all disease, war, etc on Earth. Lex's mind is just so awesomely twisted.

EXACTLY! When Cap died, although I HATED it with a passion at the time, I grew to accept it. I accepted it half in part because Bucky did an awesome job as the new Cap, and half because it SHOULD have been the Skull who killed Cap. The two of them were mortal, arch, blood enemies. They hated each other. You can't expect me to believe that after all these years all the Skull wanted to do was discredit, not kill Cap. That's just ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lex is one of the best villains ever man. I love those villains who are so twistedly mental they honestly believe their the good guys or their their victims. Lex, Joker, guys like that are so wonderfully evil and insane they believe that Bats and Supes are the bad guys and that intrigues me.

"I hate you SO much...I'm gonna make sure everyone else hates you...feel free to live and eventually make everyone believe in you again, but i'll have my fifteen minutes where you're hated." Atleast if that was Lex it would make sense that he'd wanna be seen as the hero but for red skull, the biggest friggin Nazi ever it makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lex and Magneto are two of my favs, because like you said, those guys truly believe they are the good guys, and they seem legitamately convinced of that fact too. It must be great to be that deluded.

Exactly! Why bother trying to discredit Cap? He's dead. Skull pretty much killed him. It's over and done, move on!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hm...Now I gotta ask you who wrote that? Who decided that all these years of fighting is for no more than to discredit Captain America? Because I need to know WHO to boycott.

I love how Lex is being written on Smallville, if you ever do get a chance to check it out some day even if ya gotta borrow the DVD's I'd advise ya to because it's surprisingly good. Also they allude to other things like Clark always wears Blue or Red in every episode at least once, and a quarterback at Metropolis University was actually named Geoff Johns, so that was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, the writer who killed, and is behind the Reborn story is Ed Brubaker, but 9 times out of 10, Ed is an awesome writer, I mean like Geoff Johns good. I'll give him a free pass on the whole Reborn story because all of his other Cap work has been fantastic, as good as any comic book that has been put out during the last 4+ years. His Cap work is seriously that good.

The Metropolis U quaterback being named Geoff Johns is absolutely awesome! Just for that I want to watch that series!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've heard of that guy, I don't remember reading anything by him but I know the name Brubaker has always been renown when it comes to comics. Since I've been reading them anyway, so I'll let him slide...for now.

Yeah when they said his name I couldn't believe it. I thought that was super genius as a easter egg to all of us comic fans.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dude, you don't know what you're missing! Ed's Cap run is def going to go down as THE best Cap run EVER, and I don't say that lightly. His work on Daredevil was also top notch, as was his Iron Fist issues. I also really liked his Uncanny X-Men run. I know his DC work included Gotham Central and Catwoman, but I haven't been able to find a reasonably priced full run of either series yet. As you can probably tell, I'm a REALLY big fan of Ed's work, even with the thus far lackluster Reborn mini.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe it's because I'm not big into Marvel that I haven't read his work. So if I went to pick up some of his comics what would be the one trade you recommended the most.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmmmmm.... I'd recommend his entire Captain America run. If you could get the first trade, I'd definitely recommend that. I'm telling you, 10 years from now, people will probably look back at Ed's Cap run as one of the greatest CB runs for any series ever. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Really? I've never been a big Cap fan but I'm really considering checking it out because you haven't steered me wrong yet with a recommendation. I still gotta read Crisis of Conscience. It's been sitting on my dresser for weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I know what it's like to have comics laying around your place for weeks... I've had the entire Robin series(in two seperate piles)laying on my bedroom floor for like months now. I've made a dent in my back issue piles lately, but I've still got a crazy amount of unread comics piled around my apartment.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well atleast we know the best of the rest column has a ton of ammo. Hell you could just do a Jinx column with all those issues.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah, if I had more time, I'd probably review every single issue of Robin like I did for most of the Nightwing series. Unfortunately, Accounting makes sure I don't have that type of spare time any more!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ah that sucks. When you do I'll be interested in reading what ya thought. I didn't really get into it but I have the first few issues in a Trade. I didn't care for the last few of the run because it started the Jason Todd gets Punked tradition.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh yeah, that's right, Jason shows up near the end of that run as Red Robin, doesn't he? Well, at least I have like 150+ comics to get through before I have to read that junk.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep, and he proceeds to get punked out because apparently he's the worse trained of all the Robins.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's "snipes" not Smipers, dumbass! HIYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
