Flash Secret Files #3(2001)

Here it is, the first appearance of Wally West's greatest enemy, Hunter Zolomon AKA Zoom!

  1. If only Wally knew the pain Zoom would go on to cause him and Iris. Man...I love seeing stuff like this.

  2. Yeah, I almost want to scream out, "No Wally, don't shake his hand, he's pure evil!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lol so Zolomon lost his legs somehow and Wally wouldn't help him correct? And then he used that treadmill thingy and became Zoom?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah, he got paralized by some Flash foe(or something like that)and he asked Wally if he could use the Cosmic Treadmill to go back in time and right things. Wally refused, saying that it wasn't worth the risk of screwing up reality, so Hunter tried using the Treadmill on his own, and being a non-speedster, it exploded, but gave him some kind of weird time powers, which he used to make it look like he had super-speed. I think that's pretty much how it went...

  5. Okay wait, so you're telling me Zoom doesn't have Super Speed he just slows down time? That's awesome. Also any explanation for him doing Sonic Booms from snapping his fingers?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think(I'm practically positive)that Zoom's abilities are time related, it's not even that he can slow down time, it's more like he can move along the timestream, which makes it seem like he has superspeed. It's hard to explain... I could be off, but I swear that Zoom's powers are time based, not speed based. I should pull out some old Flash books to refresh my memory. As for the Sonic booms, that's a good question! If he's not a speedster he shouldn't be abls to do that... Man, Zoom's powers are just all kinds of crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Lol so wait, other Speedsters can cause Sonic booms? I feel so unknowing!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh yeah, all pure speedsters can create sonic booms. It has something to do with them moving their fingers faster then the speed of sound, which gives you the sonic boom effect. I've never seen a good speedster use the sonic boom, probably because it can only be used for destruction. Zoom, Inertia and Prof. Zoom have all used the sonic booms though.

  9. That's so awesome dude. That just makes the Flash's even more awesome than before, is there anything those guys can't do?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm telling you, super-speed is one of those powers you might not think much of, but there are a whole mess of perks that come with being a speedster.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I always used to think it was kinda lame when I was younger but now I know Flash is one hell of a Superhero.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Same here. I never really thought of speed as a great power, but it def has some sweet advantages.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah, now I find myself thinking how awesome Flash and Lantern are when I thought they were so lame as a kid. This one dude on my facebook I went to school with had the nerve to say Ironman was better than every DC hero. Lol really? The man in the metal suit is better than Superman?

    ReplyDelete
  14. 2 years ago I prob would have agreed with that guy! Until I started reading DC books I always thought their characters were WAY inferior to Marvel characters. Luckily though I came to see the light, and I can now say with great confidence that both companies have some great, and some not so great characters.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I also preferred Marvel over DC until I started reading and got some appreciation, now I like both but I'm definitely a DC Guy, although I do like Spidey and a few other Marvel dudes. But really, Ironman over Batman? Flash? Supes?!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow, really? I def would have thought you were always more of a DC guy!

IDK, IM is a pretty tough opponent. I think he could prob defeat a Flash, and give Bats a run for his money, Tony's suit seems capable of anything. No way he tops Supes though. And although you'd never know it nowadays, since he's written like crap, Tony used to be a very complex, interesting character. And then BENDIS came along...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nah I was Marvel until I really got into comics, I loved Spidey, Venom, Ironman, Gambit, Wolverine, Cyclops and some more Marvel guys.

I don't know, I just see Flash literally running circles around Tony. And bendis, that's just like him to ruin something. Probably was his idea to unmask Spidey.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh man, when I was a kid I was a huge Gambit fan. He was def my fav Marvel character. Then I grew up and realized besides his cool exterior there really wasn't much to him.

Knowing Tony, he'd probably have some kind of heat seeking missile that could follow Flash no matter how fast he was. And yeah, although BENDIS didn't write the unmasking, I wouldn't at all be surprised if that was his idea. Most of what happens in the Marvel U HAS to go through BENDIS I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, same here, he seems so cool with his jacket, and accent and sweet ass heating up cards and other things ability but that's pretty much it, although wasn't he like a super bad ass heel in another Marvel Universe or something like that? I recall reading something like that when I was younger.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hm...I feel like Flash would just run right behind Tony and let it blast him to smithereens. So is bendis technically the Morrison of Marvel except Morrison sometimes writes really good stuff still and bendis is kinda outta gas at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  21. You know, the thing with Tony is that he's like one of the 5 smartest guys in the Marvel U, so I kind of figure he'd have something that would lock onto Flash and would follow him no matter what... But then again, Tony has been known to do some REALLY dumb things, so who knows!

Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. BENDIS is definitely Marvel's #1 guy(for some reason...). As for DC, you could probably make a case that either Grant or Geoff as the #1 guy. Since I think Batman and Robin is the top selling DC book, I guess it's fair to say Grant is prob looked at by the bigwigs at DC as THE MAN. IMO though, I'd call Geoff DC's #1.

As far as talent goes, I would say Grant is WAY more talented then BENDIS. Although lately I've been enjoying certain comics written by the Dread Lord... Either BENDIS is getting better, or I'm getting crazier(prob the second one!).

    ReplyDelete
  22. Flash would spike his drink and Tony would fall off the wagon again! Lol okay, done playing Fanboy.

I'd say Grant is the top name but for a good story, Geoff is their go to guy. That's just my opinion though.

bendis is insane!!!! Would you also say I'm smarter than him? I need more quotes for my blog :P

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ha! Poor Tony. I'm sure Tony has something built into his armor that would alert him to the alcohol or something lame like that.

Fair enough. That's the kind of thing you could very easily argue one way or the other.

Dude, EVERYBODY is prob smarter than BENDIS! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lol, if he does than I'm just completely done with him because that's Batman paranoia levels.

The thing about bendis though...is that I AM him, Dun dun dunnnn! That would blow your mind.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tony has had his super-paranoid periods. Once he ran around destroying all other suits based on his design because he didn't want the designs used for evil. He even attacked government agents who had legally acquired the suits!

Wow, if you are BENDIS, I've got to say, you sure let my criticisms slide right off your back! Nah, you're WAY too logical to be the Dread Lord.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lmao...wait...so they BOUGHT the suits, giving them full right to use them, and he said, no screw that, and blew the suits up that they bought? That's rather jackass-like. So did you see the Ironman movie and if so did you like it?

Yeah, I have logical conversations so I can't be bendis, but I'm really Geoff Johns! Now Bow to the Comic God! *Trumpets play Triumphantly*

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yup that's exactly what happened. Tony felt it would be dangerous to allow his suits to wind up in anybody else's hands, even people who brought him! Even Captain America tried to stop when he did that one, it was kind of like the reverse of the Civil War.

No I never got around seeing the Iron Man movie, but that really shouldn't come as much of a surprise!

Wow, if you're Geoff Johns how do you have the time to respond to my blog posts? You write like 100 comic books a month!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow...Tony's pretty crazy sometimes, I think he may rival Bruce in Paranoia.

Ironman the Movie was pretty good, I know you never watch them but I don't think you'd be disappointed if you got a chance to check it out.

I'm the Magnificient Geoff Johns, I can write 100 comics, comment your blog and make a wedding cake at the same time!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, Tony does go kind of crazy every now and then. Hell, the guy has revealed and then hidden his identity more than any other superhero under the sun! One day he'll tell the public he's Iron Man, and then the next he'll tell the public that IM is his personal bodyguard!

Hot damn, it must be sweet being Geoff Johns, not just for the comic thing, but because of the wedding cake! Now THAT is impressive!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lol wait...why? I'm so confused as to why anyone would believe that after he's announced being Ironman AND headed the Pro-Registration thing and has even been seen fighting in the suit without the facemask thing on.

Yeah it's awesome getting checks from DC for being such an awesome writer AND baking Wedding Cakes in my spare time for poor people who are engaged....because Geoff Johns is a friggin saint. Awww Yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great question! Tony will reveal his ID to the media, then get upset when something happens to a friend/loved one of Tony Stark thanks to one of Iron Man's enemies, then hold a press conference where he's standing with IM, claiming that they are two different people! He's done this a MESS of times too! Make up your mind Tony!

Sweet, and I mean that mainly for the wedding cakes!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lol like it's SO hard to have someone else stand in the suit. Thats so stupid...you'd think Pete would've considered that before unmasking on TV, or having Tony wear the suit and say he lied.

Oh yes, Nothing better than a Wedding cake with Ollie and Dinah on it, before Cupid pops out of it lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There were SO many better ways Marvel could have went to have the public forget Peter was Spidey(or they could have just NOT DONE the unmasking at all!!!), the direction they ultimately went(the devil? REALLY!?!)was like the worst one they could have chosen!

Now come on, there's no way Geoff Johns would have punished me by mentioning Cupid! Who are you really???

    ReplyDelete
  34. And the devil apparently has the hots (Hahaha) for Mary Jane? Really? You wanna take the wife of some twenty year old superhero? THAT's what they go with? I mean I know it's a comic but damn...horrible idea.

You caught me...I'm really *rips off mask* I'm really Andrew Kreisberg the CREATOR OF CUPID!!! Bwahahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  35. Heh heh... "the hots"... Yeah, there were so many other ways Marvel could have went to erase the Spidey unmasking thing, why they decided to add the devil, I'll never know.

ARRRGH!!!!! Oh the horror of it all! Hey, wait a minute, if you really were Andrew, you'd have been talking about Cupid a whole lot more...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Couldn't they have just had Madame Web make everyone forget? Doesn't she have some type of powers or something...

If you re-arrange the letters of all our conversations they each include the phrase "Cupid is great!" I'm so clever....

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah man, that's like one of a zillion ways they could have fixed things up. Eh, leave it to Marvel to go with the worst way possible.

    Huh, wow, that IS clever!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, things like that remind me why I'm currently reading DC Comics.

Speaking of Cupid there's some Dark Archer showing up on Smallville, I believe it may be Merlyn. He has all black and some time of goatee...

    ReplyDelete
  39. That's not to say there aren't things coming out of Marvel that I'm thoroughly enjoying, it just seems like all of their major characters(Spidey, Avengers, X-Men)really suck right now.

Merlyn would be pretty cool. I'm def a fan of his.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Captain America Reborn thing was cool right? Well before they ruined the ending and stuff.

Has he been in any issues of Green Arrow and Cupid lately? Or is he still M.I.A. from his last appearnace?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, it was pretty good... To be honest though, I was expecting a little bit better from it. It was really good, but to me it was kind of underwhelming.

Last time Merlyn appeared(to my knowledge)was when he was owned, drugged and embarrassed by Cupid... You know, Merlyn IS a member of the League of Assassins... You'd think he would have been able to deal with Cupid, but I guess not...

    ReplyDelete
  42. So as of right now if I went on a Marvel kick would your only recommendation be Ed Brubaker's Captain America stuff and The Initiative?

Well she's in special ops or something right? Maybe that's why he was owned by a woman that was beaten by her boyfriend in her very first appearance. Looks like Merlyn has Jason Todd syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, no, no, no! As much as I bitch about Marvel, there are other really great titles rolling out of the House of Ideas! Besides those two books, there's Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dark Wolverine, Daredevil, X-Factor, and I'm sure many others that I'm forgetting. Just steer clear of anything written by Yost or BENDIS, and you'd be OK!

    ReplyDelete
  44. So Dark Wolverine is about that dude who's like Wolverine's son or something right?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yep, Dark Wolverine features Daken, who is Wolvie's actual(and WAY more interesting IMO)son. Think Wolverine, but WAY more cunning. While Wolvie is pretty one-dimensional(the dude solves everything by slashing it!), Daken is a deeper, more complex character. You know how Trips is the Cerebral Assassin? That name fits Daken to a T. He'd mess with your mind like crazy before killing you, just because he can!

    ReplyDelete
  46. That sounds interesting. I think I may have to check that out. Are there any issues with his origin so I can get a really good feel for Daken's character?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmm, that's a good question... He appeared in practically every issue of Wolverine Origins from his debut, until he took over the Dark Wolverine book. I'd say try to find some cheap Wolvie origins trades. I'll see if I can think of any specific stories that really spotlight Daken though... Either that or see if you can snag the Dark Wolverine series. I think it's only been about 6 or 7 issues since Daken took on the title role. He's always manipulating people in that comic. His teammates, his enemies, his allies, everybody!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I saw your review over at the Comic Blog and that makes me wanna read it all the more. I looked him up and he sounds like a pretty awesome character. So how does he match up against Wolverine?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Honestly, he's tailor made to kill Wolvie off. Fighting wise they're evenly matched, plus Daken has no scent, which means he could easily sneak up on Wolvie. Besides that he has the ability to control the phermones of others, which means he can cause his opponents to feel fear, confusion or doubt when he's fighting them, and on top of that, just recently he had two of his claws coated with a metal that can counteract a healing factor, which means if he was to stab Wolvie with those claws, Wolvie wouldn't be able to heal from it. To be honest, everything in the Wolverine books the past year or so has been setting up for Daken to kill Wolverine... I'm just not sure if Marvel would have the balls to pull the trigger on that one.

Hmm, you did choose Wolverine on your team, didn't you...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Damn....That dude is AWESOME. Sounds like he's a hell of a member to have on your team. Especially having no scent and all that other stuff...pretty fly character.

And yes I did...too bad I already picked Daken Bwahahahahahaha!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. GRRARGH!!!! Man was I pissed when I saw that you took him! Damn you and your awesome powers of telepathy!!! *shakes fist in a rage!*

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh yeah, I had on my Cerebro (Big Ass helmet thingy patent pending) when I stole him from under your nose. Last time we discussed Ironman and I made the mistake of not picking him lol.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I disagree about Gambit he's actually a complex dude ( go read Nicieza's solo or Layman's & you'll see what i mean , when well written the ragin Cajun is pure fun! I mean you like Nate Grey so you must love most of the morally ambiguous characters)

    Now about the Zoom:
Reverse Flash has been portrayed very inconsistently over the years -- there were times when he wasn't even primarily a speedster, but used future tech in much the same way as Abra Kadabra. The trait that stayed most consistent over the years was his obsession with replacing Barry Allen, which fits perfectly with his role in "The Return of Barry Allen." he should never return after that!

Zoom, however, is fascinating primarily because of his motivation, and the fact that he really believes he needs to do evil in order to accomplish good, and that he's ultimately helping the Flash by giving him ever-greater obstacles to overcome. The only downside is that it's evidently hard to portray, but that's what makes a strong character!
