Thunderbolts #1(April 1997)

To this day, I think the revelation that the Thunderbolts were secretly the Masters of Evil was the greatest shock ending in Marvel Comics history.

  1. I totally agree. Kurt Busiek is the man.

  3. Nope, I actually didn't. What was it all about/which company was it from? I have to admit to being pretty in the dark about that series.

  4. OH MY GOSH. X-Man, you are missing out. Rememebr when I bugged you about Starman? Well, meet the next Starman. No joke.

This series is one big love letter to everything that is great about comic books. Every character is obvious ode to a marvel or dc concept, but it's not done as a satire, and the characters are still cool enough that you don't see them as total rip-offs or anything.

The story is more about the heroes that inhabit the city than any one person in particular. The heroes will get individual spotlights, so you know their back stories, and then they will appear in cameos in other stories. Busiek, Alex Ross, and Brent Anderson created an entire timeline and this huge cast for this fictional city, but it all comes together seamlessly.

I would urge you to start with the Life in the Big City trade, just to start at the beginning, but you should seriously read the Confession trade first, because I think you would LOVE the Confessor. He's like Batman, but more mysterious and dark (and a little more smug at times).

I just got the trades for like 7 dollars a piece on eBay, but if you don't want to buy one I could keep my eyes peeled and get you a cheap one. Let me know.

  5. This sounds like something that's right up my alley. I'll definitely grab the first trade, with the next issue of Blackest Night coming out this week, I'm about due to place another comic book order.

Out of curiousity, how long is the series/is it ongoing? If this series is anywhere near as good as Starman then you'll have my eternal gratitude Mr. Superkello!
